Miami County Solid Waste District
Minutes for the May 21, 2007 Meeting

Attendance: Greg Deeds, Craig Boyer, Shirley Mull, Lance Gallahan, Gary Hawley, David Grund, John Haines, Samantha Ward. Absent: Jim Walker, and Dale Wortinger.

At 8:07 A.M. the meeting was called to order by Greg Deeds.

The minutes of the April 16, 2007 meeting were read. Craig Boyer motioned to approve the minutes as is; Gary Hawley seconded, motion passed.

The May 2007 financial statement was presented. John noted one CD comes due in June, so we will have to cash in only one CD with penalty. Tax bills are projected to be mailed in August. The bill from Chesapeake Electronics was unusually high due to someone putting a refrigerator in the electronics recycling box, and Chesapeake is now charging $10.00 per TV. Samantha or John might have to check the electronics box periodically to make sure there are no refrigerators, air conditioners, etc. in the box. If an appliance would be found in the box, we would call R&B Contractor and have them remove it. Shirley Mull motioned to approve the financial statement, Gary Hawley seconded, motion passed.

Presented totals for the Tire Day that was held May 19. There were 120 people served, with 1,451 tires taken in. The line was long at the beginning of the day, but then stayed steady until the event was over.

Presented advertising report for 2006. The total spent on advertising was $17,583.13, with the PEP Grant covering approximately half of that amount. Craig Boyer motioned to discontinue advertising with Hometown Productions, Universal Adcom, and Indiana Special Olympics from the yearly advertising, Gary Hawley seconded, motion passed.

Gary Hawley moved to advertise on the map given out by the Miami County Board of Realtors, Shirley Mull seconded, motion passed.

Questioned the board about the whether the contract bids should be automatically extended or if bids should be opened up to the public. The board would like to be able to extend the current contracts without re-bidding. David Grund said that unforeseeable issues such as changes to the program at the state level, rising gas prices, etc. could be handled without having to re-bid.

John noted that the Compact Fluorescent Bulbs that are becoming popular for home use are not regulated yet, but they do contain mercury and can be classified as hazardous waste.

Gary Hawley motioned to adjourn 8:45 AM, Shirley Mull seconded, motion passed.

Respectfully submitted,
